This is the weekly companion to the weekend's message, made to spend time with all week. It follows a simple five-part rhythm: a recap of what we heard, the central thought and scripture, a practice for the week, daily scripture and reflection, and a closing prayer.
Recap
This week we heard about a professional chef named Harrison, who once told Pastor Jon: "I didn't cook this for you. I cooked it for King Jesus. Everyone at the table just got to benefit as I cooked for the King." That line reframes everything about how we work. Whatever we do and wherever we do it, God is the one we're ultimately working for, and everyone else who benefits is just sitting at the table.
Central Thought & Scripture
"Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people... the Master you are serving is Christ." (Colossians 3:23-24, NLT)
Work becomes worship when we do it for an audience of one.
Practice for the Week
Put the King at the table. Before you start something you've been dreading, cutting corners on, or doing on autopilot, picture Jesus sitting across from you and ask what changes about your work or your attitude toward it.
Daily Scripture & Reflection
Set aside some time each day to pray with these Scriptures. Bring your journal and a pen. Begin with a few quiet moments to become aware of God's presence and invite the Holy Spirit to guide you. Read the day's Scripture slowly, a few times, and notice what stands out. Read the reflection question and jot down your answer, no need to be elaborate, just a quick note, along with anything else that comes to you. When you finish, look back over what you wrote. Does anything stand out? Does anything call for action? Thank God for being with you and speaking to you, then close with the Lord's Prayer. All of this fits in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Day 1: Colossians 3:22-23 Paul wrote this to people who didn't choose their work, some not even free to choose it. Whatever your assignment this week, who are you actually offering it to? Integrity is doing the same quality of work when nobody is watching.
Day 2: 1 Corinthians 15:51-58 This whole chapter is Paul's case for the resurrection: death swallowed up in victory, our bodies raised imperishable. Verse 58 is where he lands the plane. Because we'll be raised with the One who was raised, our labor in the Lord is never wasted. What would it look like to work today like it actually matters that much?
Day 3: Romans 12:1 Worship is bigger than singing. The One you offer your work to is what makes it sacred. What ordinary place where work happens for you could become an altar this week?
Day 4: 1 Corinthians 10:31 "Whatever you do." Where have you been keeping faith and work in separate rooms?
Day 5: Genesis 1:31 God didn't call His finished work "good enough." He called it very good. Excellence isn't perfectionism. Perfectionism says your work determines your worth. Excellence says His worth determines your work. Where has "good enough" quietly become your standard, when the One you're working for is worthy of more?
Day 6: Exodus 31:1-5 God's work reflects God's character. He filled Bezalel with His Spirit to make things, not to preach. How does that change the way you see your own skill or craft?
Prayer
God, You see the work nobody else notices. Help me do it for You and not for the applause or the paycheck. Where I've let "good enough" become my standard, raise it. I don't have to prove my worth to You. I just want to give You my best because You're worthy of it. Amen.
