The Way of Warfare

Victory Church
September 20, 2026

This is the weekly companion to the weekend’s message, made to spend time with all week. It follows a simple five-part rhythm: a recap of what we heard, the central thought and scripture, a practice for the week, daily scripture and reflection, and a closing prayer.

Recap

Most of us are comfortable following Jesus when He prays, serves, works, and rests. But Jesus also confronted the devil, again and again, and He taught His followers to do the same. In Luke 10 He sends out seventy-two ordinary disciples whose names we don’t even know, and they come back amazed that the demons obeyed them in His name.

You have an enemy. Pastor Jon was clear that the goal is awareness, never fear, because “you cannot fight an enemy you refuse to acknowledge.” The good news is that the same Bible that tells us we have an enemy tells us how to overcome him.

It starts with two foundations. We are under authority: our authority in Christ begins with being under the authority of Christ. And we have been given authority, which rests in the name of Jesus. From there, Pastor Jon gave three practical steps. Get low, by submitting to God. Speak up, by answering the enemy’s lies with the Word out loud. Hold your ground, and refuse to move when the same lie comes back.

Then he brought it home. Men, put your God-given strength to work fighting for your family in prayer. Moms, bring your God-given fierceness to the unseen battle too. And when a mom and dad fight together, the enemy doesn’t stand a chance.

Central Thought & Scripture

“So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7, NLT)

The authority to resist the enemy was never earned. It was given, and it rests in the name of Jesus, which means it flows to those who live under His authority. We get low before God, we speak His Word to the enemy’s lies, and we hold our ground when those lies return. Our homes are worth fighting for, and the fight begins on our knees.

Practice for the Week

This week, name the lie you hear most often and find the Scripture that answers it. Then practice three steps.

Get Low. Consider where Jesus doesn’t yet have the final word in your life, and submit that area to Him: “God, I’m Yours.”

Speak Up. When the lie comes, answer it out loud with the Word, the way Jesus did in the wilderness. What has God already said that you need to say back?

Hold Your Ground. When the same lie returns tomorrow, don’t move. Where are you most tempted to give ground?

Finally, pray by name each day over the people God has entrusted to you, and speak over your home: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Daily Scripture & Reflection

Set aside some time each day to pray with these Scriptures. Bring your journal and a pen. Begin with a few quiet moments to become aware of God’s presence and invite the Holy Spirit to guide you. Read the day’s Scripture slowly, a few times, and notice what stands out. Read the reflection question and jot down your answer, no need to be elaborate, just a quick note, along with anything else that comes to you. When you finish, look back over what you wrote. Does anything stand out? Does anything call for action? Thank God for being with you and speaking to you, then close with the Lord’s Prayer. All of this fits in about 10 to 15 minutes.

Day 1: Luke 10:1-3, 17-20

We don’t know the names of these seventy-two, only that they went where Jesus sent them, and their authority came from the One who sent them. Where have you assumed confronting darkness is for someone more qualified than you?

Day 2: Ephesians 6:10-12

Paul reminds us that a struggle is going on around us that we cannot see, and the people who frustrate us are not the real enemy. Where have you treated a person as your enemy when the real battle is somewhere else?

Day 3: James 4:6-8

God opposes the proud, and humility puts us on His side of the battle line. That is why submission comes before resistance. Where in your life would Jesus say He doesn’t yet have the final word?

Day 4: Matthew 3:16-4:11

The Father has just called Jesus His dearly loved Son, and the enemy’s first move is to question it. Jesus answers every time, out loud, with what God has already said. What has God said about you that the enemy keeps trying to make you doubt?

Day 5: Ephesians 6:13-18

Paul pictures a soldier who has done all he can and now holds his position, armor on, feet planted. Standing isn’t dramatic; it looks like staying put in what God has said when everything in you wants to retreat. What does standing look like for you right now?

Day 6: Joshua 24:14-15

Joshua made a declaration over his household, and a home like that is fought for, most often in prayer. Who has God entrusted to you, and how will you fight for them this week?

Prayer

Father, You are Lord over everything seen and unseen, and nothing that comes against me is greater than You. I place my whole life under Your authority today, with nothing held back. Thank You for sending me out in the name of Your Son, who answered every lie with Your Word and who has already triumphed over the enemy. Forgive me for the times I have agreed with fear, with condemnation, and with lies that sounded like my own thoughts. By Your Spirit, bring Your Word to my mouth when I need it, give me courage to speak it, and give me strength to hold my ground. Cover the people You have entrusted to me, and teach me to fight for them in prayer. As for me and my house, we will serve You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Lord’s Prayer (traditional)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
